It’s a fair question, and we get it on the phone every fall. The answer is no, as long as you set the plow up for the surface you actually have. Here’s how that works.
Will an ATV or UTV plow push rocks or snow?
Snow, if the blade never touches the rock.
That sounds obvious written down, but it’s the part people miss. A plow blade doesn’t know what’s underneath it. Drop a steel wear bar flat onto loose gravel and it’ll peel a layer off and windrow it into the grass right alongside the snow. That’s not a plow problem. That’s a setup problem.
Skid shoes exist to solve it. They’re cast steel feet that bolt to the bottom corners of the blade, and they’re adjustable up and down. Set low, they hold the whole blade up off the surface so the wear bar clears it. Set high or pulled off entirely, the wear bar scrapes right down to whatever’s under the snow. Pavement wants the second setup. Gravel wants the first.

How do you set skid shoes for gravel?
You’re aiming to leave a thin layer of snow behind. Not a clean scrape. That layer is your buffer, and it’s the difference between a driveway and a gravel pile.
Set the plow down on a flat, hard surface first, like a shop floor or an apron of concrete. Lower the blade the way it’ll sit when you’re plowing. Now adjust the skids down until the wear bar sits a little off the floor. You want daylight under it, not a lot. A finger’s thickness is about right for most gravel.

You’re changing the stack, not fighting a seized bolt in the cold. Which is the point, because you’ll want to change it. One more thing worth saying out loud. A gravel driveway isn’t flat. It’s got a crown, it’s got soft spots, and it’s got that one low place by the culvert that holds water. Your skid setting is a compromise across all of it. If you’ve got a stretch that’s rougher than the rest, run a hair higher through there and come back for it once the base sets up.
What blade pitch should you run on gravel?
This is the setting most owners never touch, and on gravel it matters.
Blade pitch is how far the blade leans forward or back. It changes the angle the cutting edge meets the ground at. Eagle blades give you four pitch positions set with bolt-on stops, and the difference between them is real. Pitched forward, the edge attacks the surface and bites. Pitched back, it rides more and rolls snow up the face of the blade instead of digging under it.
On gravel you want it rolled back. You’re not trying to cut anything. You’re trying to lift a layer of snow off the top and carry it sideways. Pitched back also means that when you do catch a frozen ridge or a high stone, the blade is more likely to ride over it than to hook it.
Pitch stops are cheap and they’re a stocked replacement part, so if yours are worn or somebody lost a set before you bought the machine, that’s a quick fix. Take ten minutes in the shop in October and set it. You won’t want to be doing it in a parka.
Why the first snow is the hard one
Ask anybody who’s plowed gravel for a few years and they’ll tell you the same thing. The first real snow of the season is the one that costs you gravel.
The reason is simple. The ground isn’t frozen yet and there’s no packed base, so the rock is loose and the blade has nothing to ride on. Later in winter you’ve got a hard layer of packed snow and ice over the top, the skids ride on that, and the whole problem goes away.
So on that first one, be patient. Drive on it a few times before you plow it, or plow it high and leave more behind than you normally would. Come back for it after it’s set up. It feels wrong to leave snow on the driveway, and it’s still the right call. A little snow you can drive on beats a spring spent picking rock out of the yard with a landscape rake.
The other half of it is speed. Gravel that gets thrown rather than pushed is almost always a speed problem. Slow down on the first pass or two and you’ll be surprised how much stays put.
What gravel does to your wear bar and skids
Here’s the honest part. Gravel is harder on a plow than pavement is, and the parts that take it are the cheap ones.
Your wear bar is the steel strip along the bottom edge of the blade, and it’s the piece that’s meant to wear out. Ours is reversible, so when one edge gets rounded off you unbolt it, flip it, and get a second life out of it before you buy a new one. That’s not a small thing on a gravel drive, where you’re going through edges faster than your neighbor with the blacktop.
Skid shoes wear too, and they’re supposed to. They’re a twenty-five dollar part protecting a system that cost you hundreds. When a skid gets thin or a bracket gets bent, replace it rather than running it. A collapsed skid drops your blade onto the rock and undoes everything above.
